How’s everything, Joey?

Joey:

Everything’s good. It’s December now, and I finally handed in my last project of the year.

Hope:

Excellent! So, what do you plan to do tomorrow?

Joey:

Tomorrow? Sleep all day?! No, I haven’t got any plans yet.

Hope:

Perfect! Do you remember all the Black Friday deals that we grabbed a couple weeks ago?

Joey:

Of course. My credit card remembers even more vividly.

Hope:

Well, good news! One of my purchases came with a voucher for a beauty salon,

and it says I can bring a friend for free. Want to come with me this Sunday?

Joey:

A free salon day? Count me in! So, what services do they have?

Hope:

You mean, “what treatments do they have?”

Joey:

Right, right, what treatments do they have?

Hope:

Quite a lot actually. Here’s the voucher. Take a look.

Joey:

It says they have護髮、燙髮、染髮、修甲、護膚、去毛，and more.

Hope:

So, we can each choose any treatments we like.

Joey:

That’s great. By the way, Hope, how do you say these treatments in English? For example, the first one, 護髮, how do you say it?

Hope:

It’s hair treatment or deep conditioning.

Joey:

Hair treatment …deep conditioning…護髮. Got it. What about 燙髮?

Hope:

That’s a perm. You can get a perm to make your hair curly.

Joey:

A perm. Okay. What about 染髮?

Hope:

That’s hair coloring or dyeing your hair. You can say, “I want to get my hair dyed or colored.”

Joey:

Get my hair dyed or colored. Okay. What about 修甲?

Hope:

That’s manicure. You say, “Can I get a manicure?” Then they will trim your nails and give your hands special treatment.

Joey:

Manicure. Manicure. Can I get a manicure? Got it. What about 護膚? SPA?

Hope:

You can say to get a facial or skincare treatment if you are talking about your face. A SPA usually means full-body treatment.

Joey:

I see. So, if it’s just the face, I say, “I’d like to get a facial.

Hope:

Correct.

Joey:

And去毛?

Hope:

That is waxing or hair removal.

Joey:

Waxing or hair removal. So, I can say, “I’d like to get waxing today?” Right?

Hope:

Exactly. And another common one, pedicure.

Joey:

Pedicure? What’s that?

Hope:

It’s a treatment for your feet.

Joey:

Oh, 足部護理! I get it now. Pedicure. I am learning so much. Soon, I will be able to walk in and confidently say,

“Hi, I’d like a deep conditioning and manicure, please.”

Hope:

Yes! You will sound like a beauty-salon pro.

Joey:

Ha-ha, a beauty-salon pro. So, what about you, Hope? What do you want to try on Sunday?

Hope:

Instead of getting a perm, I think I’ll just get a trim and keep my hair length. Maybe a hair treatment, too.

Joey:

Good idea! How about getting a manicure or a facial as well?

Hope:

Why not? I’ll try a facial, too. I guess after all these treatments,

we will walk out of the salon like two brand-new upgraded versions of ourselves.

Joey:
