Dialogue: (對話)

(At the break room. )

Hope:

Hello, Joey. How’s your day?

Joey:

Busy, but I feel great!

Hope:

Wow, I am impressed! This week, you’ve been as busy as a bee.

Joey:

Yes, but I feel that my English has improved a lot.

Hope:

I bet. How do you like working with those foreign guests?

Joey:

It’s terrific. They are very friendly and open-minded. They always want to explore new things.

So, I feel lucky to show them around Taiwan this week.

Hope:

That sounds fun! So, when are they leaving?

Joey:

This coming Sunday. But guess what—they asked me to take them to a traditional market tomorrow morning.

Hope:

Oh? I am surprised. Traditional markets are something they definitely shouldn’t miss!

Joey:

True. But what do you think I can do with them? It has been such a long time since I last visited a traditional market.

Hope:

Hmm… I would take them to have breakfast there. You know Taiwanese breakfast is always a hit with visitors.

Joey:

Oh? Good idea! I can let them try our traditional breakfast – such as 燒餅, 油條, 飯糰and 豆漿. So, how can I translate these for them, Hope?

Hope:

Well, 飯糰 can be direct translated as Rice Ball.

Joey:

Rice Ball. That’s easy.

Hope:

Well, 燒餅 is Clay Oven Rolls because they are traditionally baked in a clay oven.

Joey:

I see. Clay Oven Rolls are 燒餅. What about油條?

Hope:

油條 can be translated as Fried Dough Sticks or Fried bread sticks. They are crispy and light.

Joey:

Right. Fried Dough Stick, 油條. 就是油炸的條狀麵團. They are long pieces of deep-fried dough.

Hope:

Exactly. As for 豆漿, it is Soy Milk since it is made from soybeans.

Joey:

Soy milk. 那鹹豆漿 是不是叫做 Savory Soy milk?

Hope:

Exactly. I love Savory Soy milk.

Joey:

How about 米漿?

Hope:

That is Peanut brown rice milk because it is made from peanuts and brown rice.

Joey:

Ah, and we can’t forget蘿蔔糕.

Hope:

Of course. It is Radish cake.

Joey:

Radish cake, 蘿蔔糕. And maybe they will also want to try 鹹粥. How do I say that in English?

Hope:

粥 is congee, so 鹹粥 is Savory congee.

Joey:

Savory congee, 鹹粥. 那地瓜粥不就是 Sweet potato congee?

Hope:

Exactly. It is Sweet potato congee.

Joey:

對了! There is also饅頭 and包子.

Hope:

Well, 饅頭 is Steamed bun and 包子 is Steamed stuffed bun because it has filling inside.

Joey:

哇~ 光是早餐就有數不完的選擇! There are so many breakfast choices. Oh, and don’t forget 蔥抓餅 and 炒麵.

Hope:

Right. Those are Flaky scallion pancake and Fried noodles.

Joey:

Flaky scallion pancake, 蔥抓餅and Fried noodles, 炒麵.

Hope:

And for some other people who take breakfast seriously, they might even go for a bowl of Braised pork rice.

Joey:

Braised pork rice?  滷肉飯!?

Hope:

That’s right.

Joey:

I think those foreign guests will love it.

Besides all the vegetable stalls, food stalls and butcher’s stands, they will probably want to try all kinds of breakfast there.

Hope:

I bet they will.
