Hope:

Oh, I have read that report earlier today. It discusses about problems of death from work.

Joey:

Yes. The case in the report passed away because of not having enough rests. He worked almost every day without a break.

Hope:

Yes. It says he almost lived in the office. That’s too crazy. If I were him, I would quit and look for a better job.

Joey:

I would, too. I think right now, in Taiwan, most of the companies 相當重視 their employees and pay them well.

Hope:

Yes. Those good companies value their employees.  If you should work overtime,

you deserve an extra pay to make up your loss of quality time with family and risk of your health.

Joey:

對，如果要求員工加班，公司就要給予員工相當比率的加班費，畢竟員工是犧牲家庭生活和健康未公司賣命。So, how do we say 加班費in English?

Hope:

We can just say overtime or overtime pay.

Joey:

Overtime? I thought we only use it as work overtime, 加班。

Hope:

Well. It also means the extra money you get when you work overtime.

For example, in Taiwan, you get your overtime if you work on weekends.

Some companies would give the employees comp time instead when they work overtime.

Joey:

Comp time? What’s that?是補償性休假嗎?

Hope:

Yes. Comp time means compensatory time.

I see. By the way, as an employee, I care about 基本工資、勞健保、holidays and 一些福利。Ｈow do we say those terms in English?

Hope:

Hmm… 基本工資is Basic wage. 健保 is Health Insurance and 勞保is Labor insurance. 公司福利is benefits or benefits package.

Joey:

Health Insurance is健保and Labor insurance is勞保. And公司福利is benefits 或 benefits package. 基本工資is Basic wage. I see.

Hope:

Good companies always provide their employee adequate benefits.

Joey:

對了，Hope，how do we say 退休金in English?

Hope:

Okay. 退休金is pension or pension plan..

Joey:

Pension plan. I think Every good company should provide their employees a good pension plan

because they spend their time helping the company make money.

Hope:

That’s true. And besides these, I also think a safe and comfortable workplace is very important.

Companies should never risk their employee’s life in the workplace.
