Dialogue: (對話)

Hope:

Happy Valentine’s Day, Joey.

Joey:

Happy Valentine’s Day, Hope.

Hope:

Any plans for the Valentine’s Day with your boyfriend?

Joey:

Well, I am trying to book a 像樣的餐廳for dinner tonight.

Hope:

You are trying to book a decent restaurant for dinner tonight?

Joey:

Yes. I am trying to book a decent restaurant for dinner tonight, but they are 不是客滿就是無敵昂貴!

Hope:

No kidding. They are either fully booked or ridiculously overpriced.

Joey:

Yes. They are either fully booked or ridiculously overpriced. I just can’t believe it!

Hope:

Well, welcome to Valentine’s Day chaos. Have you heard of this term?

Joey:

No. Valentine’s Day chaos?

Hope:

Yes. Valentine’s Day chaos. For example, if you are not booking restaurants three months in advance,

you are probably doomed to pizza on a couch at home.

Joey:

What? 如果你沒早三個月預定餐廳,你可能注定在家裡沙發吃pizza! Oh, 這真是個貼切的描述! Valentine’s Day chaos.

Hope:

So, you should have planned ahead.

Joey:

I know. But my boyfriend just came back from his study in Canada last month. And he is leaving for school next week.

That’s why I would like to treat him to a romantic restaurant where there are candlelight,

a fancy menu and even a violinist playing music in the corner.

Hope:

So, why don’t you cook by yourself at home?

Joey:

Oh, I can but I don’t want to. You see 我可能因為要準備料理而累得像條狗.

Hope:

I see. You think you might be as tired as a dog after all the cooking.

Joey:

Yes. I might be as tired as a dog after all the cooking, but 我想我應該要看起來狀態很完美, 不是嗎?

Hope:

I totally understand. You are supposed to look good at such a romantic occasion, right?

Joey:

Right. I am supposed to look good at such a romantic occasion. That’s why I decided to go to a restaurant.

Hope:

And even worse, you might burn the dishes if you fail.

Joey:

Yes. Wouldn’t that be too crazy? You know what I mean.

Hope:

I understand. Besides the restaurants. The price for flowers are even as high as your restaurant bill.

Joey:

Don’t remind me! Roses are way too expensive this year!

Hope:

So, what are you going to do if there aren’t any suitable restaurants for you?

Joey:

I don’t know.

Hope:

What about skipping those clichés and making your own traditions?

Joey:

Clichés? What’s that?

Hope:

Clichés are things or opinions that have been done or said before so often that they became not interesting or even boring.

Joey:

I see. Clichés means陳腔濫調?

Hope:

Yes. You can try to make this day a special one for both you and your boyfriend.

Joey:

Like what? Buying a box of chocolate?

Hope:

Or drawing a card and write some messages that you would like to say in it.

Joey:

Hmm…let me think about it.

Hope:

Originally, Valentine’s Day is not just a day for couples. Some people even celebrate with their friends by exchanging Valentine cards.

It’s about showing love, not just spending money.

Joey:

Okay. I like the idea. Maybe I can try making my own card. And buy him a box of chocolates.

Hope:

That would be fun.

Joey:

And money saving!

Hope:

That’s right.

Joey:

My boyfriend will be happy because I am going to make it a money-saving day.

Hope:

For sure.
