Dialogue: (對話)

Hope:

Joey. Welcome back! How are you doing?

Joey:

Terrific!

Hope:

I bet! I can tell it from the big smile you wear on your face! How was your vacation in Japan?

Joey:

Oh, my gosh. Hope, it was AMAZING!

Hope:

I am all ears! Tell me all about it!

Joey:

I am all ears? 是洗耳恭聽嗎?

Hope:

Yes, you are right. I am all ears! So, where did you go in Japan?

Joey:

Kyoto. I went to Kyoto this time. And I was lucky to 體驗日本新年。

Hope:

Wow! You are right. In Japan, they celebrate the new year on January 1st.

And you were so lucky to experience the New Year there in Japan.

Joey:

Yes, I am so lucky to experience the New Year celebration in Japan this year.

Kyoto is so beautiful, especially during the New Year.

Hope:

Hmm…It must be crowded in temples there.

Joey:

Yes, there were so many people. People went to temples to wish good luck in the beginning of the New Year.

Hope:

So, what did you do there?

Joey:

Well, I visited some famous temples and did what they did to experience their … 氣氛…

Hope:

Atmosphere.

Joey:

Right, atmosphere! I visited some famous temples to experience their atmosphere of the New Year.

I also tried lots of Japanese food. And of course, I did lots of shopping there.

Hope:

Shopping, you say? Did you get me anything?

Joey:

Of course. I got something that might interest you—a 福袋! Let me get that for you.

Hope:

Wow. Thank you! A lucky bag, fukubukuro!

Joey:

Oh?! 福袋in Japanese is fukubukuro and in English is a lucky bag?

Hope:

Yes. People normally call fukubukuro a lucky bag or a mystery bag in English.

Joey:

I see. Here you are. A lucky bag I got for you.

Hope:

Thank you, Joey. So, what’s inside it?

Joey:

I don’t know. See, this is fun Japanese New Year’s tradition.

They put all these 沒特定的商品into one bag and then offer a 大幅度的折扣。

重點是,you don’t know what is inside until you buy it!

Hope:

Oh, it’s like a treasure hunt in a bag. Shops fill the grab bags with random items, and they sell them at a steep discount!

Joey:

Yes, it’s like a treasure hunt and they sell them at a steep discount. 而且是真的很大的折扣哦!

Hope:

So, the value of the items would be more than what you paid for, right?

Joey:

Yes, that’s why I became a crazy shopper again in Japan.

Hope:

Can I open it?

Joey:

Sure. Go head.

Hope:

Wow. There is a set of pens, a planner for the new year, a roll of tape with sakura flowers and a pack of

adorable animal stickers and lots of colored pencils. I love this lucky bag! Practical and stylish!

Joey:

I am glad you like it. I got this lucky bag at a 文具店.

Hope:

A stationery store.

Joey:

Yes. A stationery store. And I also got some other lucky bags from 3 clothing shops, 2 beauty shops and an electronics store.

Hope:

So, did you have fun finding out the items you got?

Joey:

Of course. On New Year’s Day, people line up outside stores for hours just to get the best ones.

You know some lucky bags in popular stores were 秒殺!

Hope:

I bet. They sold out in minutes.

Joey:

Yes. I feel lucky to have taken this trip in Kyoto.

Hope:

And, Joey, you convinced me. New year, I will plan a trip to go to Japan and have my own “lucky bag adventure.”

Joey:

I will go with you again, Hope.
