Hope:

So, today, why don’t we talk about some traditions to do on the Lantern Festival?

Joey:

Sure, why not?

Hope:

Talking about the Lantern Festival, I remember when I was young, my brother and I would make lanterns by ourselves each year.

Joey:

Each year?

Hope:

Yes, a different design each year. I made it with some empty formula cans.

Joey:

Formula cans? 牛奶罐嗎?

Hope:

Yes. It was one of the kind each year.

Joey:

Wow!

Hope:

After I made it, I would light a candle in it and carry it around with kids in my neighborhood. That was fun because our lanterns are all different.

Joey:

That sounds fun. When I was young, my parents always took me to watch lanterns (賞花燈) somewhere in Taiwan.

I was always amazed by colorful lanterns and designs.

Hope:

I bet. By the way, do you guess Lantern riddles on the Lantern Festival?

Joey:

Guess Lantern riddles? 猜燈謎嗎?

Hope:

Yes. Guess Lantern riddles or solve Lantern Riddles.

Joey:

I love it. Whenever I solved the riddles, I was overjoyed.

Hope:

You are smart. Guessing lantern riddles is one of an interesting traditions on the day.

Joey:

Oh! On the Lantern Festival, people make元宵 to eat.

Hope:

Right! Yuanxiao, tangyang, or glutinous rice ball soup is an important traditional treat for the Lantern Festival.

Joey:

Yes, I love glutinous rice ball soup. And I remember I always helped my mom make them together.

Hope:

Hey, there are some other activities in Taiwan worth mentioning.

Joey:

What?

Hope:

It is the sky lantern in Pingxi and the Beehive Fireworks Festival in Yanshui.

Joey:

Oh! Yes. I have been to Pingxi to放天燈。

Hope:

You have released sky lanterns in Pingxi?!

Joey:

Yes. When I was still a student. I went there with my friends. It was an unforgettable experience.

We wrote our wishes on the lanterns and released them to the sky. The scene was really 壯觀。

Hope:

I bet it was spectacular.

Joey:

It was spectacular. And鹽水蜂炮, the Beehive Fireworks Festival is also spectacular.

Hope:

Yes. Beehive Fireworks Festival in Tainan, Yanshui attracts tens of thousands of people to visit every year.

Joey:
