Hello, everyone! Welcome to Intercultural Corner! I’m your friend, Lem. Today, we are traveling to Germany to learn about a very famous part of its history—the Berlin Wall. This wall once divided a city and its people. Let’s find out more about it!
The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 during a time called the Cold War. It was built to separate East Berlin and West Berlin. East Berlin was controlled by the Soviet Union, while West Berlin was supported by countries like the USA and the UK.
The wall was not just a simple fence. It was a big, strong wall, almost 12 feet high, with guards and watchtowers. People living in East Berlin were not allowed to cross to the west. Families and friends were separated for many years.
For 28 years, the Berlin Wall was a symbol of division. But in 1989, something amazing happened. The people of Berlin started to come together. They protested, and finally, the wall was torn down. It was a moment of joy and freedom for everyone.
Today, parts of the Berlin Wall still stand as a reminder of the past. Visitors from all over the world come to see it and learn about its history.
The Berlin Wall shows us how important freedom and unity are. It also reminds us that people can make a change when they work together. Thank you for listening, and see you next time for Intercultural Corner!
